Runnells
Christian Church
Our Denomination
Runnells Christian Church is a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Our denomination does not profess creeds or require members to adhere to strict doctrine; rather, we extend membership to anyone who affirms that Jesus is the Christ and Son of the Living God. Our identity has formed around these characteristics of our faith:
Open Communion. The Lord's Supper (or communion) is celebrated weekly in worship. It is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ.
Freedom of Belief. Disciples are called together around one fundamental of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.
Baptism by Immersion. We believe baptism is the basis of membership in the church and indicates that a person has chosen to follow Jesus for themselves. For this reason, we do not baptize infants and instead wait until an individual is old enough to choose to be baptized. We also baptize by fully immersing in water. However, Disciples do recognize and honor baptisms done in other traditions.
Belief in the Oneness of the Church. Disciples have a long history of working for Christian unity. Today we live that out by partnering with other faith communities to bring about healing and wholeness in the world.
The Ministry of Believers. Both ordained and lay persons lead the church in worship, service, and spiritual growth.
