Beliefs and Practices

Runnells Christian Church is affliated with the Disiples of Christ. Like most Christians, the Disicples affirm that Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God and offers saving grace to all; and that all persons are God's children.

Open Communion. The Lord's Supper or commmunion, is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ.

Freedom of Belief. Disciples are called together around one fundamental of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.

Baptism by immersion. In baptism, the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God begins. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored.

Belief in the oneness of the church. All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.

The ministry of believers. Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth

About Our Pastor

Pastor Katie Russell

Pastor Katie grew up in Norwalk, Iowa. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Drake University (Go Bulldogs!) and a Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt Divinity School (Go Commodores!). She was ordained in 2013 and has since served churches in Falls Church, Virginia and Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Katie was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was first introduced to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in high school. After a few years of spiritual wandering, Katie made her home in the Dsciples of Christ. She loves this movement because of its commitments to both individual freedom and communal unity.

In church, Katie loves to preach, lead worship, and nurture the spiritual lives of children. Outside of church, she likes to make good music and cook good food.
